We have dined in the finest restaurants in Rome, London, Paris, Hong Kong, China. We know good food when we taste it! Our children worked with us from an early age, and they too, took trips to far away places. We were very blessed, to get to know people that traveled with us, and the people we met around the world.
On The Great Wall in China
Here I am with our friends the Millers on the great wall! It seemed to stretch on forever, up and down and around the hills. There was a lot of people going for long walks.
We stayed at the Great Wall Hotel nearby and went to the Great Hall of The People for a gala dinner. We did not recognize any of the food, it was different. But, they were so polite, bowing and smiling, we tried to taste everything.
Living on The Water in Hong Kong Harbor
This is one of the many communities of Hong Kong. Whole family's live on these boats in the harbor. They catch small fish, filet them, then hang them our to dry in the sun. ( Not sure how that would taste) If you get tired of your neighbor, just move away! I did not see how they were anchored, it was so crowded. Notice the skyscrapers in the background. This is such a city of diversity. We stayed at the Mandarin Hotel. This is where they had the little, buttery cheese straws, they served with cocktails. YUM
Monaco Mediterranean Cruise
This is the Isle of Capri where we went into the Blue Grotto in small boats. The water was so clear and light blue, when you let your hand drag through, it looked like diamonds were in the water. Really something to see.
Monaco Mediterranean Cruise
Dinner in Cannes with some of the other dealers and Pontiac executives. That's Larry and Candy Walters across the table from John and I.
This is the restaurant that was up in the hills above Cannes. The wine was homemade, and I'm sure had was stronger than we are used to, but it was good!
You had to make your own salad from a basket of vegetables and the only dressing was olive oil with anchovies in it. A unique experience was had by all!
We were afraid to eat the dessert, a cat kept walking over it on the table!
Hong Kong Harbor
This is one of the many restaurants we dined in. This one was called "Jumbo" and it floated in Hong Kong Harbor. The restaurant was lit up like Christmas!
Hong Kong Harbor was a sight to see! The Chinese junks that so many lived on, the skyscrapers around the edges, and the mountains above. It was spectacular with all the lights.
Airliners were not allowed to land past 10:00 at night. If you were delayed for some reason, your plane was directed to Korea until morning. That happened to part of of our party. They stayed in a hotel for 5 hours with only their carry-on bags. Boy were they tired, but happy to finally arrive!
Ritz - Escoffier Cooking School
The chefs were very friendly but had limited English abilities. With this southern accent the translations were pretty funny! Don't let anyone tell you the French are unfriendly, they were very nice. They just don't have time for small talk. Kind of like New York. I had been told New yorkers are very cold but, we found they are just in a hurry to get where they are going, and they have to walk! In Paris the restaurants spend a lot of time creating beautiful, wonderful dishes. Flowers are everywhere. Each meal was an event to linger over. We especially liked the outside seating and, there were no flies!
Venice, Italy
This was the view from the restaurant of our hotel in Venice. The sunsets were spectacular! From here we could walk, where possible, all around Venice. There were a lot of places that you had to have on boots or wade water to get around. The wine was really good and so was the food.
We met our good friends, the MIllers on this trip. Their luggage was lost on the flight over and it was not funny to try and find clothes and underwear to wear in Venice! Their things look different. Their suitcase came 3 days late with a silver, size 10 ladies shoe in it. Ha (Connie is small)
Lunch above Cannes
As you can see we were on the edge! What a view! The mediterranean sea below us. That incredible dark blue water with the gray-white rocks going up in the hills. At night you could see the lights of Monaco and Cannes along the edge of the water.
We had dinner along the waters edge in a very large patio type area. It was open until the sun went down then a glass roof closed over us! Spectacular!
One of Our Boats
We took our boat down the Mississippi (just John & I, no crew) from the Illinois River to New Orleans. He was the captain, I was the crew. Lots of work! But we always had fun wherever we went.
We ate a lot of catfish on that trip. We could usually find a good restaurant close to the river. Where there were no docks, we anchored off to the side and ate ham sandwiches. We docked next to Barbara Mandrell's boat in New Orleans. She wasn't on it but, her crew was very nice!
China - The Great Wall
Look up the hill behind the door-way to the wall. It goes over hills and around and around. It was something to see.
Orient Express
We boarded in Rome and went through Paris to London - overnight. This was one of the sales trips we won. The whole train was Pontiac dealers from across the country. It was fabulous! We had compartments with elegant little bathrooms, and little china sinks. We were all friends and spent the evening around the piano singing, and drinking french wine. And, the food was again, gourmet. Afraid I would miss something, I woke John early and we bathed and dressed so we could open our curtains and see the countryside. It looked like the back side of towns in America! (We went back to sleep.)
Ritz - Escoffier Cooking School
This was a class room setting, they cooked we listened and then we ate the prepared dishes. And drank Champagne along side! Great way to do lunch.
Traveling
This is the Orient Express dining room. It was so elegant! I felt like I was somebody special! This is the dining car and, there was a lounge with a grand piano in the next car. We sang songs together as we ended the evening. What warm memories!
Venice, Italy
This was the view from our hotel restaurant. We overlooked Venice, and it was something to see. The hotel was on the bay and the sunsets were spectacular!
We were on Gondolas all over Venice, but we took power boats out to the Murano Glass factory. We got to see them blow and make the glass.
The power launches were varnished wood like our old Chris Craft boats used to be here. Beautiful!
Rome, Italy
These are some of the the Pontiac group at Alfredo's restaurant.
Hawaii - Swimming with Dolphins
What a wonderful thing to do! The dolphins would come up on your knee and let you rub them. Their body felt like a wet inner-tube. They talked to you, too.
None of the other ladies signed up for this extra activity from Pontiac. It was special!
Alfredo - of "Fettucini Alfredo"
One of our trips was to Rome where we had lunch at Alfredos. He was the creator of "Fettucini Alfredo" and he personally served our group, took pictures with us, and joined us for conversation. He was the perfect host. If I would ever go back to Europe, it would be to Rome. We stayed at a wonderful hotel and again, the food was memorable. One night after dinner our hosts loaded us all into carriages and we raced through Rome.
The fondest of all our travel memories was in Rome. The hotel management sent just John and I, on a carriage through the park, to see Trevi fountain. It was a full moon coming through the trees, and it was magical. I threw in three coins, who knows, maybe we'll go there again.
John and Betty in Switzerland
This is the view from the bottom of the Alps.
We ate a lot of cheese! It was sliced with a hot wire and served with dill pickles and heavy bread.
Lunch in the Swiss Alps
This is the view from the top of the alps. We were above the clouds.
We ate a lot of wonderful cheese and chocolates in Switzerland. There were flowers everywhere and the streets were so clean.
Hong Kong
Pontiac dealers and executives at a floating restaurant in Hong Kong Harbor. Really fun! We didn't have "Dim Sum" here but we did in a couple of places.
Those little plates of all those different foods was really good.
Dinner in Japan
As you can see there are no chairs. There was no forks either! Japan had the most unusual food of all countries we visited. Thin slices of beef roast cooked in broth, paper thin like bacon, with no seasoning. No bread or potatoes. I did like the lotus root, though.
They use human fertilizer so I was reluctant to eat any fresh vegetables! The carrots were 18" long and bright orange. No flies in Japan either!
Cruise for winners of a Pontiac sales contest
This was the ship that General Motors, Pontiac Division, used to take us on the cruise from Monaco through the Mediterranean. The food was very different from other countries we had visited. Lots of vegetables, especially eggplant, smaller amounts of meat. Each day we ate lunch in the city of the port we were visiting. The food appeared rich and heavy but, was very light and satisfying. More pesto's than tomato sauces. Dinners were always on board with the other dealers and executives from Pontiac Motor Division. We got to know people from all over the U.S. Some of them won the same sales contest almost every year like we did, so we all became friends.
Monaco Mediterranean Cruise
John, standing in front of a small harbor with a village behind him.
This was one of the ports we stopped at on the cruise. I'm sorry I can't remember the name. As you can see the buildings are right on the water, with dining by the waterside. Very romantic and peaceful, hearing the water sounds and smelling the salt air.
I don't remember them having flies either. Everything was clean and neat.
Monaco Mediterranean Cruise
This is one of the little harbors we would go into for lunch. The ship would anchor off, and we would go in on the launch. They were very pretty little villages with cafe's by the water. The food was to die for!
Hand made baby clothes, lace tablecloths and handkerchiefs. Beautiful workmanship. I brought a lot of gifts home from there.
Monaco Mediterranean Cruise
This is one of the harbors between Monaco and Monte Carlo. It is something to see all those yachts and that beautiful harbor. The whole area was one beautiful sight after another. The palace in Monaco, Cannes and the nude bathers, (they wore g-strings) the rocks and hills above the city. Lots to see!
In the hills above Cannes France
This was a restaurant in the hills above Cannes. You felt like you were dining on a ledge, hanging on with your fingertips! Great view and great food!
They had buses with big windows, it made you feel like you were hanging over the cliffs! We were all hungry and tired from so much sight seeing.
Paris
This is me in Paris when Connie and I went to the cooking school. We walked for miles in Paris! It was such a great trip. Good food, museums, and there was a lot of shopping. But, we didn't shop that much we were busy an the tours. This was a Chrysler trip and they took us all around town.
Monet's Garden in Giverny
When Connie and I went to the cooking school in Paris, we also went to Monet's Garden in Giverny. There was a stream that flowed through the garden, and it was so clear you could see the fish and the water lilies all around. The willow trees touched the water and the different flowers were everywhere. I could see how you could paint water lily's and willows all day long and never tire. (like Monet) It was paradise!
Nana B and the Manitee
We called her Lolita and she loved lettuce from the bar that was located on a canal in Ft Lauderdale. The locals fed her all time and she would roll over to get her belly rubbed! And, she would raise up beside your boat and blow into your face, if you weren't quick enough to move away!
We took our boat down the Mississippi
More than once we took our boat down the Mississippi in the fall and back up in the spring, for the season on Lake Michigan. It is a long hard trip, but we enjoyed being on the water, and we stayed on the boat during the winter. Ft Lauderdale is a fun town and I love the beach. But going 15 mile per hour against a current going 10, it was certainly slow go! The fuel cost would make the trip prohibitive now!
Once in St. Louis the current was so strong you could have water skied from the dock. One of the boaters needed to clear his props, (the Illinois river is full of lines from barges) we wouldn't let him go in the water without a line on him. He said " I am a good swimmer and I'm strong." We insisted, he relented, put the line around his waist and eased into the water. He was instantly swept down river about 20 feet. (the end of the boat line) When John pulled him in he said "thank you, I would have been a goner." John and I don't swim, so we preach safety.
London, Big Ben Clock
We have been fortunate to have traveled to London 2 or 3 times, so it seems like home. The food is not highly seasoned there and somewhat bland.
We were there once and had no plans for dinner so, we asked our hotel where to go. They sent us to a gourmet restaurant down the street. We asked for the restaurants signature dish. It was "Poulet in a pig bladder!" A very young chicken poached in broth, inside the bladder of a pig! It had been thoroughly cleaned and looked like a big rubber balloon with a long neck, tied into a knot. It was opened and the chicken was taken out, along with the broth and served in bowls. Baby vegetables were in there two. Very tender, but rather bland.
Dolphins
On the days we crossed the Gulf from Panama City to Clearwater, Fl. we could count on having several dolphins swim alongside our boat, playing in our wake. It was just like seeing liquid sunshine! They would go along for miles, jumping and flipping over, just like they knew you were watching, and they wanted to entertain. They even talked, in their own way, to us!
Me in Milwaukee
Lake Michigan - Coho Salmon For Dinner. We fished so much and caught so little, we figured that this one cost us about $100.00 a pound!
Lake Michigan is tough, cold water and big waves close together. We sometimes had to wear jackets in July when we went out a few miles.
Incredible, but Inedible!
John and I took two of our grandson's fishing on the Gulf, and this is what we caught. It took almost an hour to get it up, to see what we had. Boy's wanted to bring it on board but I cut the line!
