Some of my earliest, and fondest memory's are of cooking beside my mother or grandmother. Some of life's best lessons can be learned in the warmth of a kitchen, with the smell of fresh bread or cookies. Being from the south, we spent a lot of time, cooking and eating!
Kris And Her Girls Making Christmas Cookies
This picture was taken in our condo above our dealership. We made cookies for all 50 or so, employees and also our customers at Thanksgiving and at Christmas time. The grandchildren all helped, even the boys, then they got to give them out. We also served coffee.
The kids were so proud of their work when people would compliment them on how good they were. They even wore their aprons down to serve them.
They don't look excited here, but thy were!
Ritz - Escoffier Cooking School
This was a class room setting, they cooked we listened and then we ate the prepared dishes. And drank Champagne along side! Great way to do lunch.

The chefs were very friendly but had limited English abilities. With this southern accent the translations were pretty funny! Don't let anyone tell you the French are unfriendly, they were very nice. They just don't have time for small talk. Kind of like New York. I had been told New yorkers are very cold but, we found they are just in a hurry to get where they are going, and they have to walk! In Paris the restaurants spend a lot of time creating beautiful, wonderful dishes. Flowers are everywhere. Each meal was an event to linger over. We especially liked the outside seating and, there were no flies!
Helping Nana B
I started my grandchildren in my kitchen at an early age! This is Elizabeth helping me load this dish washer. She is 26 now and getting married in June. And she has found the right one! She will be a McCarthy, an Irishman, and they will go to Ireland on their honeymoon. (He was born here)
Pictures, recipes and stories from Ireland will be coming soon!
Nana B and "Jessie Pooh"
My granddaughter and I love to spend time together in the kitchen, making memories as well as good food! Jessie is almost grown now but, still loves to be in the kitchen with me. She learned how to completely bake a pecan pie just before Christmas.
Ritz - Escoffier Cooking School, Paris
Boy, was this a trip! My good friend, Connie, and I went to the Ritz Escoffier Cooking School at the Ritz Hotel in Paris, compliments of Chrysler. (We won the sales contest, and John did not want to take a trip to cook.)
We toured Giverny, Monet's Garden, and saw the sights of Paris. We cooked in the mornings, gourmet foods, french wines, and we toured in the afternoons. The museums were something to see, and the food was wonderful!
Cookie Time
As you can see, the kids have fun in the kitchen! I started them all at an early age, even sitting on the counter beside me. Those were the good times!
John and Kathryn in the aprons I made them. They had so much fun learning to make cookies!
Christmas Dinner
At John's Grandmother's - The Family Feast Circa 1980. As you can see it's all men at the table. It used to be custom, the men ate first, the children second, the women last.
By the time the women sat down the food was cold, and they were tired. The women stood behind and waited on the table. It was this way because the kitchens were so small. Women washed the dishes by hand as anyone left the table, and reset the table for the next person. It was a little chaotic and noisy. But, this was the only time in the year you all got together. Now you see everyone at funerals.
Alfredo - of "Fettucini Alfredo"
One of our trips was to Rome where we had lunch at Alfredos. He was the creator of "Fettucini Alfredo" and he personally served our group, took pictures with us, and joined us for conversation. He was the perfect host. If I would ever go back to Europe, it would be to Rome. We stayed at a wonderful hotel and again, the food was memorable. One night after dinner our hosts loaded us all into carriages and we raced through Rome.
The fondest of all our travel memories was in Rome. The hotel management sent just John and I, on a carriage through the park, to see Trevi fountain. It was a full moon coming through the trees, and it was magical. I threw in three coins, who knows, maybe we'll go there again.
Ritz - Escoffier Cooking School
My diploma! We didn't actually cook, It was a classroom setting, but we were up front and personal with the chefs. They grated potatoes and coated lamb chops, cooked monkfish with a brown butter sauce, made souffles and, at the end of the class, we were served the food along with french champagne.
After class we toured Paris, all the art museums, and wonderful restaurants. Connie is a great painter and between her and seeing Monet's work, I started watercolor classes at the Art League on Marco Island that next winter. I hope to get back to painting soon.
